Collective Punishment

Shmuel Neumann, Ph.D.

After the Bible defines the borders of the Holy Land in the end of Numbers (33), the Bible explicitly forbids making a peace treaty with the indigenous population. The punishment for ignoring this commandment is also spelled out. The peace partners will be "pricks in your eyes, and thorns in your sides, and they will distress you on the land in which you are dwelling, and it will come to pass, that as I thought to do to them — I will do to you." (Numbers, 33:55-56).

The Jews were thereafter commanded to keep the Holy Land for the Holy People and after the subdivision of the Holy Land to the families entering it, it was ordered to be an everlasting possession that may never be permanently sold, but only leased for a maximum of 49 years. On the Jubilee year, it must return to the owner.

Neither, Joshua or King David fulfilled the biblical commandment of cleansing the land of non-believing gentiles. As a result, what the Jews were supposed to do to the indigenous population was done to the Jews. They suffered expulsion after expulsion, genocide after genocide. There were more than 25 million Jews killed in the Babylonian and the Roman invasion. The six million in our times was not the first holocaust. The exile did not change the biblical imperative. It, in fact, validated the prediction of the Bible.

In our time, the forbidden peace treaty with the indigenous population triggered the intifada in which over a thousand Jews were killed throughout the length and breadth of the Holy Land. Not only does the current government continue to commit the sin of the Roadmap, a policy that is a patent violation of biblical imperatives, but even worse, it plans to withdraw from Gaza and parts of Samaria, the ludicrous "disengagement plan" and forcibly evict all Jews, whether Israeli or American.

The Jews have sinned and are punished as preordained.

But, America will also be punished as preordained. Joel said it better that I can. "I will gather all the nations, and bring them down into the valley of Jehoshafat (east of Jerusalem). Then I will enter into judgment with them there...on behalf of My people and My inheritance, Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations; and they have divided up My land" (Joel 3:2).

Dividing Up God's Land

Strange as it may sound, the creator of the universe has laid claim to the land of Israel for Himself!

The land, moreover, shall not be sold permanently, for the land is Mine. (Leviticus 25:23).

They will not remain in the Lord's land... (Hosea 9:3).

What's more, God made His land part of the everlasting covenant with Abraham's descendants. It is true that 400 years later, God gave the Israelites conditions for continuing to enjoy His land (the terms of the Sinai Covenant), but the right to possess it was always theirs — by covenant. The banishment for breaking the Sinai Covenant ended May 14, 1948. Since then, Israel has had God's complete blessing to possess His land. The judgment whereby they were banished for breaking the covenant has been completed. In the same way a convict may return to society upon completion of his sentence, Abraham's descendants were allowed to return to their Land.

From God's point of view the Jews now have every right to possess the Land in its entirety. Their right to the land is unconditional. God gave the Land as an everlasting possession to the descendants of Abraham. That includes the disputed West Bank and Golan Heights. It also includes Lebanon and parts of Syria and Jordan.

Some maintain that the Palestinian Arabs have a right to the Land because they've been there longer. This argument may wash in the United Nations, but it is meaningless with the Lord God. From His point of view, Israel's claim can never be revoked; after all, it is guaranteed by His own word.

Land for Peace

Our President and Secretary of State are now preoccupied with bringing about a lasting peace in the Middle East. Regrettably their solution is for Israel to give up land in exchange for peace. Ironically, the prime architects of this plan, Bush and Baker, are both Christians, but their actions show they didn't understand God's position. You see, there is no Palestinian question in His mind! Listen to what Ezekiel prophesied about the fate of those who usurp God's Land:

Because you have said, "These two nations [Israel and Judah] and these two lands will be mine, and we will possess them" although the Lord was there, "Therefore as I live," declares the Lord God, "I will deal with you according to your anger and according to your envy which you showed because of your hatred against them; so I will make Myself known among them when I judge you" (Ezekiel 35:10-11).

Surely in the fire of My jealousy I have spoken against the rest of the nations, and against all Edom [read Palestinians], who appropriated My land for themselves as a possession with whole-hearted joy and with scorn of soul...
(Ezekiel 36:5).

Could God's position be more plain? He will repay the usurpers of His Land with the same animosity and hatred they have shown toward the Jews. As you rejoiced over the house of Israel because it was desolate, so I [God] will do to you. You will be a DESOLATION, O Mount Sier, and all Edom, all of it (Ezekiel 34:15).

Getting back to Joel's prophecy, is there any doubt that "land for peace" falls into the category of "dividing up of God's Land?"

The United States, European Union, United Nations all want an expulsion of the Jews from half of biblical Israel and are all part of dividing the Holy Land. Though no nation stands with Israel, she is not alone. For "the Lord will go forth and fight against those nations," and He will bring all the holy ones (the saints) with Him. The Bible graphically depicts the fate of those who go to war over Jerusalem (at Armageddon).

Now this will be the plague with which the Lord will strike all the peoples who have gone to war against Jerusalem; their flesh will rot while they stand on their feet, and their eyes will rot in their sockets, and their tongues will rot in their mouth. And it will come about in that day that a great panic from the Lord will fall on them; and they will seize one another's hand, and the hand of one will be lifted against the hand of another (Zechariah 14:12-13).

Sounds like a nuclear, chemical or maybe biological terrorist attack, doesn't it?

Vigorously stop Bush and overzealous State Department for your own sakes. The Lord's judgment is exacting.
